2 documentary viewing at CHAROUPOMYLOS Panormo

Secret of the Snake Goddess This is the story of the discovery of Knossos and the Minoans by Sir Arthur Evans -a story as mysterious as the Minoan world itself. Following Canadian archaeologist Alexander MacGillivray, the film travels to Crete, New York, Boston and Toronto, to discover the secrets behind famous Minoan masterpieces. The secrets they hide will change our view of the Minoan world. Through dramatic reconstructions shot in the archaeological site of Knossos, documentary footage and high quality computer animation, “The Secret of the Snake Goddess” brings to life the Golden Age of great discoveries and reminds us why History is important for us, today. ΤΗΕ ΝΕΤWORK The rarity of Greek antiquities has increased the antagonism between museums, collectors, curators, art dealers and smugglers, giving a free rein to a deadly network of illicit activities. This network is the subject of the documentary. What is legal or illegal in the peculiar world of the art market? What makes the trade of antiquities go around? An extensive investigation into the realm of the illegal trade of classical antiquities and into the problem of safeguarding cultural treasures. “It was especially gratifying for me to see so many strands pulled together. Someone with no background in the subject would equally enjoy it -or be appalled by what it exposes.” Mark Rose Archaeology Magazine “A ‘must-see’ for museum directors, curators, collectors, art historians and art history students. Dealers and auction houses too should see this fascinating documentary, even though I am very pessimistic that it will change their attitude towards the trade in unprovenanced antiquities.” Ton Cremers Museum Security Network
